NBA condemns Omoyele Sowore’s conduct at Abuja Federal High Court, describing it as disruptive and disrespectful to courtroom decorum

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has condemned the conduct of human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, following an incident at the Federal High Court in Abuja.

The NBA Sowore Abuja court conduct controversy arose after reports that the activist disrupted proceedings and attempted to engage journalists inside the courtroom.

In a statement signed by NBA President Afam Osigwe, the association described the incident as a serious breach of courtroom decorum.

The NBA said that although courtrooms are open to the public in a democratic society, they must remain orderly and respectful spaces for the administration of justice.

According to the association, Sowore allegedly entered the courtroom with individuals carrying recording equipment and appeared to stage a media briefing.

It further stated that he moved into the inner bar area and addressed national issues even though his case was not listed for hearing.

The NBA noted that Sowore was not accompanied by any legal practitioner at the time of the incident.

The association also said the situation created tension in the courtroom and led to a confrontation with Senior Advocate of Nigeria Musibau Adetunbi.

It emphasized that courtroom spaces must not be used for publicity stunts, advocacy theatrics, or confrontational engagements.

The NBA added that such actions could undermine the dignity of the judiciary and intimidate legal practitioners.

While reaffirming the public’s right to attend court proceedings, the association stressed that this does not include turning courtrooms into press conference venues.

The NBA called on court authorities to maintain order and ensure respect for judicial processes.

It also expressed support for legal practitioners who insisted on maintaining discipline during the incident.

The association reiterated its commitment to protecting the integrity of the legal profession and the sanctity of the courts.
