Dutch coach Simon Kalika expresses frustration over Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, citing talent squandered and officiating concerns

Dutch tactician Simon Kalika has expressed profound frustration over Nigeria’s failure to secure qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, calling the Super Eagles’ absence a significant blow to the global tournament.

Nigeria’s hopes of reaching the finals were dashed following a decisive defeat to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), a result that compounded earlier setbacks and effectively ended the country’s World Cup campaign.

In response, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) lodged a formal petition with FIFA, challenging several key officiating decisions during the match against the DRC. FIFA has yet to issue a ruling on the matter.

Kalika, who served as assistant coach to Samson Siasia during Nigeria’s campaigns at both the 2005 FIFA U‑20 World Cup and the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, described the failure to qualify as particularly painful given the depth of talent in the squad.

“The Super Eagles have some of the most exciting attacking players in Africa, capable of thrilling audiences on the world stage,” Kalika said.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup, set to be co-hosted by the United States, Mexico and Canada, will now proceed without one of Africa’s most recognisable football nations for the second consecutive edition, a situation that has sparked disappointment among fans and commentators alike.
