Coventry City lead the race to sign Nigeria midfielder Frank Onyeka from Brentford as Lampard seeks reinforcements for Premier League promotion push

Coventry City are reportedly leading the race to sign Nigeria international Frank Onyeka from Brentford, with head coach Frank Lampard seeking to bolster his squad for a Premier League promotion push, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

Negotiations have already begun between Coventry and Brentford, with both loan and permanent transfer options under discussion as the Championship leaders assess their midfield requirements ahead of the transfer deadline, according to Sky Sports.

Coventry are believed to be ahead of rivals Birmingham City and Sheffield United in the pursuit of the 28-year-old central midfielder.

Sky Sports noted that Onyeka is increasingly likely to leave Brentford before the window closes, with Lampard considering him a key component of Coventry’s promotion plans.

“Frank Lampard is looking to strengthen Coventry’s bid to win the Championship and gain promotion to the Premier League. They are currently top of the table by three points,” the report added.

Interest in Onyeka is not confined to England; La Liga side Valencia are also monitoring the midfielder’s situation as Brentford weigh up offers for a player who has struggled for regular game time this season, making just six appearances across all competitions.

Onyeka spent the 2024/25 season on loan at Bundesliga club FC Augsburg and has made 75 Premier League appearances in five seasons with Brentford, contributing with energy, ball-winning ability, and tactical discipline.

Internationally, he was part of the Nigeria squad that finished third at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations after losing to Morocco on penalties in the semi-finals.

The midfielder began his professional career in Denmark with Midtjylland, scoring 14 goals in 95 appearances before moving to England.
