Nigeria Flood Warning puts 107 LGAs in 29 states at risk, with NiHSA urging urgent action to protect lives, livelihoods, and infrastructure

Nigeria Flood Warning has been issued by the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NiHSA), highlighting serious risks of flooding across 107 local government areas in 29 states and the Federal Capital Territory between September 1 and 15.

The advisory, released Monday in Abuja, is part of the 2025 Annual Flood Outlook and is backed by real-time hydrometric readings, river forecasts, and satellite mapping.

According to NiHSA Director-General Umar Mohammed, over 631 communities and more than 50 critical transport and infrastructure points face potential impact.

The risk levels range from moderate to very high, including river overbanking, flash floods, and localised inundation in low-lying areas.

The states under flood watch include Adamawa, Akwa Ibom, Anambra, Bauchi, Bayelsa, Benue, Borno, Cross River, Delta, Ebonyi, Edo, Gombe, Imo, Jigawa, Kaduna, Kebbi, Kogi, Kwara, Lagos, Nasarawa, Niger, Ogun, Ondo, Plateau, Rivers, Sokoto, Taraba, Yobe, and Zamfara.

NiHSA warned that floods could disrupt highways, bridges, and farmlands, while also increasing the risk of waterborne diseases due to contamination.

Authorities have been urged to activate contingency plans, pre-position relief materials, and deploy emergency response teams. Local governments and community leaders are expected to identify evacuation routes, sensitise residents, and prepare shelters.

“Communities and individuals should avoid flooded roads, move to higher ground where necessary, and follow official safety instructions,” Mohammed stressed, describing the advisory as a proactive power move to safeguard lives and property.
