Nigeria Flying Eagles begin FIFA U-20 World Cup 2025 in Chile, aiming for historic first global title with talented squad and promising stars

The seven-time African champions are determined to finally lift a global youth title after coming close on multiple occasions.

This is Nigeria’s 14th appearance at the FIFA U-20 World Cup, the most by any African nation. Since their debut in 1983, the Flying Eagles have consistently produced talented players who have gone on to star for club and country, including John Obi Mikel, Joseph Yobo, Julius Aghahowa, Taiwo Awoniyi, Chinedu Ogbuke, and Taye Taiwo.

Nigeria’s finest moments at the tournament came in 1989 and 2005. In 1989, the team staged the “Dammam Miracle,” coming back from 4-0 down against the Soviet Union to win 5-3 on penalties, eventually finishing as runners-up to Portugal.

Sixteen years later in the Netherlands, another strong squad led by Obi Mikel and Taye Taiwo reached the final but lost 2-1 to Argentina, inspired by Lionel Messi.

The 2025 squad is seen as another promising generation. Striker Kparobo Arierhi impressed in qualifiers and at club level, scoring 22 goals in 15 matches in the TCC League.

Captain Daniel Bameyi provides defensive leadership, while goalkeeper Ifeanyi Harcourt is expected to play a crucial role with his composure and shot-stopping skills.

Head coach Aliyu Zubairu has assembled a balanced team, blending youth and experience. His preferred 4-3-3 formation emphasises quick transitions and attacking football, suiting Nigeria’s traditional style of play.

In addition to Norway, Nigeria will face Morocco and Tunisia in a competitive group, making every point crucial in the race to the knockout stages.

For the Flying Eagles, Chile 2025 is more than a tournament—it is an opportunity to secure their first-ever FIFA U-20 World Cup trophy and showcase a new generation of Nigerian talent on the global stage.
