Nigeria wins digital governance award at 2025 OGP Summit in Spain, securing top global and regional honours for transparency and tech innovation

Nigeria wins digital governance award, emerging as a global pacesetter after clinching two prestigious honours at the 2025 Open Government Partnership (OGP) Global Summit in Spain.

The country was awarded the Overall Global Award in the Digital Governance category, triumphing over 160 commitments submitted by 42 countries.

Nigeria also bagged the Regional Award for Africa and the Middle East, further reinforcing its position as a digital transformation leader.

The achievements were made possible through a strong collaboration between the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) and civil society group Dataphyte.

Their joint efforts showcased Nigeria’s capacity to blend technology, policy, and public participation in governance.

According to organisers, Nigeria’s submissions stood out for their innovative use of digital tools to boost transparency, accountability, and citizen engagement.

This aligns with the government’s broader strategy under the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy to create an inclusive digital ecosystem.

The awards also reflect the progress of the country’s open data initiatives, civic tech platforms, and public service delivery reforms.

They mark a turning point for Nigeria’s global reputation in using technology for good governance.

Speaking on the awards, stakeholders described them as a “validation of Nigeria’s commitment to participatory governance” and a powerful incentive to scale up digital inclusion and open data frameworks.

The OGP, a multilateral initiative promoting transparent and accountable governance, commended Nigeria for being at the forefront of regional efforts to integrate citizens into decision-making processes using digital means.
