Nigerian football supporters 2026 World Cup support grows as fans back African teams after Super Eagles fail to qualify for the tournament

Nigerian football supporters, led by the Nigeria Football Supporters Club and the Unified Nigerian Supporters Club, have unveiled plans to support African teams at the 2026 FIFA World Cup across North America on 14 April 2026, following Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the global tournament.

The coordinated effort, which brings together fan groups from Nigeria, Ghana and South Africa, is aimed at ensuring strong African presence in the stands despite the Super Eagles’ absence from the competition.

Vincent Okumagba, chairman of the Unified Nigerian Supporters Club, is currently in Canada preparing to follow Ghana’s group-stage fixtures.

Ghana are set to face Panama, England and Croatia, with matches scheduled across Toronto, Boston and Philadelphia.

Okumagba, who also serves as Vice President of the African Football Supporters Association alongside South Africa’s Joy Chauke and Ghana’s Osuman Kassim Awal as secretary, said the initiative reflects a shared continental commitment to football unity and pride.

He confirmed that the group plans to support Ghana in Canada before travelling to Mexico to back South Africa during their fixtures, including their opening match against hosts Mexico in Mexico City on June 11, followed by encounters with the Czech Republic and South Korea.

The supporters’ movement, however, has been affected by Nigeria’s failure to qualify, with Okumagba noting that the World Football Fans Alliance has expressed disappointment over the Super Eagles’ absence from the tournament.

He added that while sponsorship support has been pledged for selected fan leaders, financial constraints may limit the ability of Nigerian supporters to travel to the United States to follow other African teams, including Egypt.

Despite these challenges, the groups insist their commitment remains firm, describing the initiative as a unifying and powerful show of African solidarity on football’s biggest stage.
