President Bola Tinubu assented to the transformative legislation this week, marking the first major overhaul of insurance regulation in over two decades.

The Act, passed by the National Assembly earlier this year, introduces sweeping changes that target growth, consumer protection, and global competitiveness.

According to the National Insurance Commission (NAICOM), the law creates a “promising opportunity to transform the industry,” especially by raising minimum capital requirements, digitising operations, enforcing compulsory insurance policies, and establishing protection funds for policyholders.

“This Act is a game-changer,” NAICOM declared, stating it would unlock the full potential of the sector and enable Nigeria to edge closer to its $1 trillion economy goal.

The insurance and finance sector already leads GDP growth, expanding by 15.03% in Q1 2025, fueled by digital innovation and financial inclusion.

NAICOM praised stakeholders and lawmakers, emphasizing the Commission’s commitment to fully implementing the Act’s provisions.

It also noted that the reform would improve market confidence, attract investment, and prepare the sector for stronger regional participation through platforms like the ECOWAS Brown Card System.
