The Nigerian Medical Association may halt services nationwide if the Federal Government fails to meet its demands by the 21-day deadline on July 23

The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has warned it could suspend medical services across Nigeria if the Federal Government fails to meet its demands by July 23.

The association issued a 21-day ultimatum on July 2, following a controversial circular from the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission.

The circular outlined revised allowances for federal medical and dental officers. According to the NMA, these changes breach previous agreements and undermine the welfare of doctors.

NMA President, Prof Bala Audu, stated on Sunday that the association is prepared to take decisive action if necessary.

“We have made our position clear. The ultimatum ends on July 23, and if the Federal Government does not address our demands, we may have no choice but to proceed with a strike,” he said.

He criticised the circular for including terms not mutually agreed upon and emphasised that policy changes affecting medical professionals should arise from joint consultation. “We have rejected that circular outright,” he added.

Prof Audu revealed that talks have taken place between the NMA and government officials.

He noted that key figures such as the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof Muhammad Pate, and the Minister of State for Health, Dr Iziaq Salako, participated in the discussions.

However, a recent meeting was postponed due to the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari.

“We expect that after the funeral ceremonies, government stakeholders will reconvene with us, hopefully by Monday,” Prof Audu said. “Otherwise, the 21-day ultimatum still stands.”

He stressed the urgency of resolving the dispute, stating that failure to act swiftly could trigger a strike that would impact medical services nationwide.

The Katsina State chapter of the NMA has also condemned the circular, expressing “grave disappointment” and demanding its immediate withdrawal.

A communique issued after a State Executive Council meeting warned of potential disruptions in medical services if the situation remains unresolved.
