NPFL betting scandal deepens as more players face questioning, despite Adewale Adeyinka’s suspension being lifted by the league

The NPFL betting scandal continues to widen, as the Nigeria Premier Football League announced it will invite additional players for questioning in its investigation into alleged match-fixing and betting in the Nigerian topflight, The PUNCH reports.

Former Plateau United goalkeeper, Adewale Adeyinka, was the first to face the panel last Thursday. He had been suspended after reportedly refusing to sign a betting and match-fixing clause in a contract offered by Shooting Stars Football Club (3SC).

However, the league has now lifted the suspension on Adeyinka, citing his cooperation and the need for fair hearing.

In a letter obtained by The PUNCH, NPFL COO Davidson Owumi stated:

“The information received from the inquest, coupled with our investigative findings, has necessitated further inquiry into this matter, and all those mentioned to be involved one way or the other in unravelling this matter will be invited.”

He added that while Adeyinka is now free to register for any club of his choice, the probe is far from over.

The goalkeeper took to Facebook to explain his stance:

“During the contract negotiation phase, I noticed a clause about termination due to betting allegations. I asked for clarification to ensure decisions would be based on solid evidence, not rumours.”

He also clarified that his previous contract termination with Plateau United was tied to a match where he didn’t even play.

The PUNCH learned that several of Adeyinka’s former Plateau United teammates—who also left the club following the initial scandal—will be summoned for questioning.

This development mirrors a similar probe last season involving Lobi Stars, where players were investigated after the club’s media officer Emmanuel Ujah accused them of fixing matches. Ujah was later banned by the league.

The NPFL betting scandal is now being treated as a serious threat to the integrity of the league, with officials determined to hold all involved accountable.
