NULGE FCT strike begins January 27 as Area Council staff protest unpaid entitlements and join ongoing FCTA industrial action

The Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees, Federal Capital Territory Chapter (NULGE FCT), has directed its members to commence an indefinite strike from Tuesday, January 27, in solidarity with ongoing industrial action by FCTA workers.

The decision was announced in a communiqué jointly signed by NULGE FCT President, Ibrahim Kabi, and Secretary, Sa’ad Abdulmumini, following an emergency State Executive Council meeting in Abuja on Monday.

The union said its action follows directives from NULGE’s national body and calls by the Nigeria Labour Congress, noting that unresolved issues such as unpaid entitlements and promotion arrears directly affect Area Council staff across the territory.

“All NULGE members across the six Area Councils are to withdraw their services effective January 27, 2026,” the communiqué stated.

It added that the strike would also serve as a platform to press pending demands currently under negotiation between the FCT Minister and the ministerial committee.

The union leadership urged members to remain steadfast, stressing that industrial action had become necessary to safeguard the welfare of local government employees.

FCTA workers, under the Joint Union Action Committee (JUAC), began an indefinite strike on January 19 over similar unresolved welfare issues.

The National Industrial Court had previously issued an interlocutory injunction halting the strike following an application by the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike.

Justice E.D. Subilim granted the injunction on Thursday, January 21, and adjourned the case, which seeks to compel workers to return to duty, to Tuesday, January 27—the same day NULGE FCT members are set to commence their strike.
