Omo-Agege senatorial waiver approved by NDC as former APC leaders prepare for Delta Senate races in 2027 elections

The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) on Thursday, May 28, 2026, approved waivers for former Deputy President of the Senate, Ovie Omo-Agege, and former Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Victor Ochei, to contest senatorial seats under the party’s platform in the 2027 general elections.

The decision allows Ovie Omo-Agege to pursue the Delta Central Senatorial seat, while Victor Ochei is expected to contest for the Delta North Senatorial District under the opposition party.

In a statement issued by the National Publicity Secretary of the NDC, Osa Director, the party said the approvals followed the formal defection of both political figures from the ruling All Progressives Congress.

The party described the development as a strategic and significant boost to its growing political structure in Delta State ahead of the 2027 elections.

According to Osa Director, the Omo-Agege senatorial waiver was granted in recognition of the former lawmaker’s political experience, leadership credentials and grassroots influence across Delta Central.

The NDC said both Omo-Agege and Victor Ochei possess the competence and political strength required to provide effective representation and expand the party’s support base in Delta State.

“The leadership of the party notes that the decision to grant the waivers was taken in recognition of their political experience, leadership capacity, and commitment to democratic ideals, good governance, and service to the people,” the statement read.

The party further assured the duo of a transparent and inclusive platform capable of supporting their ambitions and contributing to democratic growth in the state and the country.

The announcement comes barely six days after Ovie Omo-Agege formally resigned from the APC and declared for the NDC in a dramatic political shift ahead of the next election cycle.

The former deputy Senate president also pledged support for the NDC presidential candidate, Peter Obi, while confirming his intention to return to the Senate through the Delta Central seat.

In a separate statement released through his media adviser, Sunday Areh, Omo-Agege described the NDC as a party founded on accountability, inclusion and grassroots participation.

He said consultations with political associates and stakeholders across Nigeria convinced him that voters desired leadership focused on integrity and visible results.

The Omo-Agege senatorial waiver development follows his earlier defeat in the APC senatorial primaries, where incumbent senator Ede Dafinone emerged victorious.

Omo-Agege criticised the state of infrastructure and public services in Delta State, arguing that despite significant federal allocations, many communities still suffer from poor roads, weak healthcare systems and abandoned projects.

He pledged to strengthen the NDC structure in Delta State and mobilise support for the party ahead of the 2027 elections, insisting that the opposition had the capacity to reshape governance in the state.

The former lawmaker also promised to advocate policies aimed at job creation, support for small businesses, improved healthcare, quality education and stronger accountability in public spending.

Describing the 2027 elections as a defining moment, Omo-Agege urged youths, women and traditional leaders across Delta State to actively participate in the democratic process.
