Operation Sweep Abuja Clean targets crime and illegal transport in the FCT. Over 280 vehicles impounded in citywide security crackdown ordered by Minister Wike

The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has intensified its clampdown on illegal transport activities and street crime in Abuja with Operation Sweep Abuja Clean, impounding over 280 vehicles in the past week.

The security crackdown, initiated under the directive of FCT Minister Barr. Nyesom Wike, has seen a multi-agency task force sweeping through black spots across the capital city.

The operation targets vehicles with covered plates, unregistered taxis, street beggars, and scavengers linked to criminal activities.

Speaking through Dr. Peter Olumuji, the FCTA’s Director of Security, Adamu Gwary stated:

“We cannot fold our arms and watch criminals and illegal operators overrun Abuja. This clampdown is a clear warning: the FCT will not be a safe haven for those who break the law.”

So far, over 40 cars, 200 motorcycles, and 40 tricycles have been seized. Many of these vehicles were operating without valid documentation, aiding in criminal activity, or violating traffic laws.

Street beggars and scavengers arrested during the raid are currently being profiled at the Bwari Rehabilitation Centre. The FCTA confirmed that genuine cases would receive vocational training, while others would be repatriated.

Olumuji noted the operation was a direct response to the rising demand from Abuja residents for more security. “Taxis without proper colour codes or number plates are being removed. These steps are crucial to reducing the crime rate in the city,” he added.

Addressing recent concerns about “One Chance” robberies, including the death of a Ghanaian national, Olumuji affirmed that investigations are ongoing. “We are not taking chances. Vehicles without proper documentation are under scrutiny,” he said.

The operation continues across hotspots including Life Camp, Asokoro, Wuse, and Area 1, with the Minister determined to make Abuja uninhabitable for criminals.

“This city is becoming increasingly hostile for criminals,” Olumuji concluded. “And that’s exactly what the Minister wants—an Abuja where law-abiding residents feel safe, and criminals have nowhere to hide.”
