Osun Assembly marriage registration bill passed alongside irrigation law to strengthen social and agricultural institutions across the state

The Osun State House of Assembly on Monday passed two key legislations — the Islamic and Traditional Marriages (Registration) Bill and the Water Users’ Association (Irrigation) Bill — aimed at strengthening social institutions and promoting agricultural development across the state.

A statement by Olamide Tiamiyu, Chief Press Secretary to the Speaker, Adewale Egbedun, said both bills were passed after the consideration of committee reports and clause-by-clause adoption during plenary.

The Islamic and Traditional Marriages (Registration) Bill, sponsored by Hon. Lawal Bamidele Rasheed, provides a clear legal framework for recognising, documenting, and protecting marriages conducted under Islamic and traditional rites in Osun State.

Speaking at the plenary, Speaker Egbedun said the legislation “respects our cultural and religious values while ensuring that all marriages within Osun State are duly recognised and protected under the law.”

The second bill — the Osun State Water Users’ Association (Irrigation) Bill — seeks to create a legal and institutional framework for the establishment and management of Water Users’ Associations (WUAs).

The associations will oversee irrigation systems, promote sustainable water use, and improve crop yield and food security.

Egbedun explained that once signed into law, the bills would “empower farmers and rural communities to manage irrigation infrastructure efficiently and promote social justice and economic growth.”

Tiamiyu confirmed that clean copies of the bills will be transmitted to Governor Ademola Adeleke for assent, marking what he described as “significant milestones in advancing cultural preservation and rural development in Osun State.”

This development follows the Assembly’s earlier passage of the Multi-Door Courthouse Establishment Bill and the Osun State Road Traffic Law and Vehicle Inspection Service Bill, 2025, both aimed at reforming dispute resolution and road safety in the state.
