The appointment brings Vieira back to the country where he was born and gives the former France international his first opportunity to manage at international level.

The Senegalese Football Federation confirmed the appointment, describing Vieira’s arrival as a strategic move aimed at building a high-level technical team in line with the country’s sporting ambitions.

“Mr Patrick Vieira is the new coach of the Senegalese national A team,” the federation said in its announcement, adding that details of his official presentation and next steps would be communicated later.

Vieira succeeds Thiaw, whose tenure ended after Senegal’s elimination from the 2026 World Cup in the last 32. Senegal lost 3-2 to Belgium in the knockout stage.

Thiaw had taken charge in 2024 and guided Senegal through a period that included the country’s 2025 Africa Cup of Nations campaign before his departure following the World Cup.

For Vieira, the appointment represents a significant new chapter after several years of club management in Europe and the United States.

His coaching career began with New York City FC in 2016 before spells with French club Nice, Premier League side Crystal Palace, Strasbourg and Serie A outfit Genoa. Vieira left Genoa in November 2025 and had been without a coaching position since then.

His time at Crystal Palace lasted from 2021 to March 2023, while his subsequent spell at Strasbourg preceded his move to Genoa.

Vieira arrives with an illustrious playing background. He was a central figure in France’s 1998 World Cup-winning side and also helped France win the European Championship in 2000. He earned more than 100 international caps.

At club level, Vieira is particularly remembered for his influential spell with Arsenal, where he made more than 400 appearances and won three Premier League titles.

His appointment also carries a strong personal connection. Born in Dakar, Vieira moved to France as a child and ultimately represented France rather than Senegal at international level.

The new Senegal manager will have little time to settle into the role, with the next international window approaching in September.

Senegal, the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations champions, are preparing for the 2027 tournament, with qualifying matches expected to begin in September.

Vieira therefore inherits a talented side with considerable expectations around it.

His immediate task will be to restore confidence after the disappointment of the World Cup and establish a clear direction ahead of the next major African tournament.

The appointment is also an opportunity for Vieira to demonstrate whether his experience managing clubs can translate successfully to the international game, where preparation time with players is considerably more limited.

The Senegalese federation has yet to announce the date of Vieira’s official unveiling, but his tenure is expected to begin immediately as preparations for the September fixtures gather pace.
