Speaking during a recent episode of the Tea With Tay podcast, Isime shared her views on the role money plays in relationships, arguing that while love is important, it is often not enough to shield couples from the realities of financial hardship.

The actress said she does not subscribe to the belief that marrying a financially struggling partner automatically leads to a fulfilling life, noting that economic pressures can place significant strain on relationships and family wellbeing.

“Marriage is not a poverty alleviation scheme but I don’t believe marrying a poor man can make you happy,” Isime said.

She explained that challenges such as unpaid rent, inability to afford school fees and difficulty providing basic necessities can undermine the quality of family life and create stress for couples.

“When rent is due, school fees can’t be paid and there is no food in the house, it is difficult to have a fantastic life,” she added.

The actress was careful to distinguish between love and financial comfort, emphasising that the two are not necessarily the same thing.

“I am not saying there is no love without money. But love and fantastic life are not the same,” she said.

The comments have generated discussion on social media, where opinions remain divided over the balance between love, financial security and long-term compatibility in relationships.

Financial expectations in marriage have long been a topic of debate in Nigeria and beyond, particularly as rising living costs, housing expenses and economic uncertainty continue to affect young couples.

Relationship experts often argue that while wealth alone cannot guarantee happiness, financial preparedness can reduce sources of conflict and improve household stability.

Isime’s remarks align with a growing conversation among public figures who advocate greater financial planning before marriage. The actress encouraged intending couples to attain a reasonable level of financial stability before taking on the responsibilities of marriage and raising children.

Her candid observations have resonated with many listeners who see financial readiness as a critical foundation for family life, while others maintain that commitment, shared values and mutual support remain equally important ingredients for a successful marriage.
