Lagos police confirm the Peller arrest reckless crash case after a viral livestream accident, warning influencers against dangerous online stunts

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested and detained social media influencer Habeeb Hamzat, popularly known as Peller, over a reckless driving incident that ended in a car crash during a live-stream, sparking public outrage and safety concerns.

The arrest was confirmed on Tuesday by the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Superintendent of Police Abimbola Adebisi, who said the incident occurred on Sunday, December 14, 2025, and posed a grave threat to public safety.

SP Adebisi said the viral footage showed Habeeb Hamzat driving dangerously before crashing his vehicle while broadcasting live to his followers, an act the police described as reckless and life-threatening.

According to the statement, the conduct that led to the Peller arrest reckless crash incident amounted to behaviour capable of causing fatal harm to both the suspect and other road users.

The police said the matter had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for a comprehensive investigation, adding that Habeeb Hamzat would be charged to court upon the conclusion of inquiries.

The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Olohundare Jimoh, warned social media influencers and members of the public against exploiting online platforms to promote unlawful or dangerous acts.

CP Jimoh said the command would apply the full weight of the law to anyone found endangering lives, regardless of social status or online following, stressing that reckless stunts for digital engagement would no longer be tolerated.

The incident has reignited debate over the rising trend of hazardous online content, with public commentators calling for stricter enforcement to curb dangerous behaviour driven by the pursuit of viral attention.

Police authorities reiterated that road traffic crashes remain a major safety concern in Lagos, often linked to speeding, distraction and disregard for traffic regulations, and assured residents of sustained enforcement to protect lives and property.
