Postecoglou Tottenham finances criticism follows Thomas Frank’s sacking, with the former Spurs boss questioning the club’s wage structure

Former Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou has criticised the club’s transfer strategy and wage structure following the dismissal of Thomas Frank, claiming the north London side are “not a big club” financially.

Thomas Frank, who succeeded Ange Postecoglou last summer, was sacked on Wednesday with Tottenham Hotspur sitting five points above the Premier League relegation zone. The decision deepens a period of instability at the club.

Speaking on The Overlap’s Stick to Football podcast, as reported by BBC Sport on Thursday, Ange Postecoglou said the club’s financial framework restricted recruitment during his tenure.

“When you look at their expenditure and particularly their wage structure, they’re not a big club,” Ange Postecoglou said.

“When we were trying to sign players, we weren’t in the market for those players,” Ange Postecoglou added.

The Postecoglou Tottenham finances criticism centred on the club’s inability to compete for high profile targets.

Ange Postecoglou said Spurs could not match the financial demands required to sign players such as Pedro Neto, Bryan Mbeumo, Antoine Semenyo and Marc Guehi, all of whom secured major moves elsewhere.

Ange Postecoglou guided Tottenham Hotspur to a fifth place finish in his first season and ended the club’s 17 year wait for silverware by winning the Europa League in 2025.

However, a 17th place league finish the following campaign led to his departure.

Reflecting on his spell in charge, Ange Postecoglou suggested the club were unwilling to take the financial risks necessary to compete consistently at the highest level.

“I felt like Tottenham as a club were saying, ‘we’re one of the big boys’, and the reality is I don’t think they are,” Ange Postecoglou said. “To actually win, you’ve got to take some risks.”
