Ruben Amorim has received a three-year vote of confidence from Jim Ratcliffe as Manchester United aim for stability despite a turbulent start to the season

Ruben Amorim Manchester United tenure is set to continue, as INEOS co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe confirmed the under-fire manager will be given three full years to prove himself at Old Trafford.

Despite a rocky start that included a 15th-place finish last season and an early League Cup exit to fourth-tier Grimsby, Ratcliffe has refused to buckle under media pressure calling for Amorim’s dismissal.

Speaking on The Business podcast from The Times, Ratcliffe said:

“Ruben needs to demonstrate he is a great coach over three years. That’s where I would be. You can’t run a club like Manchester United on knee-jerk reactions.”

The Ruben Amorim Manchester United era began in November 2024 after Erik ten Hag’s sacking, but the Portuguese coach has endured a tough introduction.

United have failed to string together consecutive league wins, and their failure to qualify for the Champions League was compounded by a Europa League final defeat to Tottenham.

However, Amorim has the full support of Ratcliffe, who now controls the football side of the club.

The British billionaire, who owns just under 30% of Manchester United, emphasised the importance of patience.

“The press want overnight success. They think it’s a light switch… but rebuilding a football club takes time,” he said.

Ratcliffe also took the opportunity to defend controversial cost-cutting measures that included over 400 job losses and the removal of staff perks.

“There’s no such thing as a free lunch,” he said. “The club had become bloated. We’ve focused on putting it on a sustainable, healthy footing.”

Though critics remain vocal, this vote of confidence means Ruben Amorim’s Manchester United project is safe for now.

With a tough fixture against Liverpool looming after the international break, the Portuguese manager knows the pressure won’t disappear — but at least he’ll have time to respond.
