Samuel Okwaraji Memorial Tournament kicks off November 8, inspiring young Nigerian footballers to showcase talent and honour a national hero

Samuel Okwaraji Memorial Tournament is set to light up the Nigerian football scene from November 8, over three decades after the tragic loss of the Super Eagles midfielder.

Organisers announced the Under-16 national competition during a press conference in Abuja on August 12, describing it as more than just a football event it is a platform for unity, friendship, and the nurturing of raw talent from across the country.

Senator Osita Izunaso, Chairman of the Organising Committee, said the initiative aims to keep Okwaraji’s legacy alive while inspiring young players.

“In honouring him, we remind ourselves that true greatness is in service, not self,” Izunaso said, noting that the late star was both a brilliant footballer and scholar.

Former Super Eagles coach Samson Siasia recalled the day Okwaraji collapsed on the pitch in 1989, lamenting that inadequate medical attention contributed to the tragedy. “It was an avoidable death,” Siasia stated.

NFF Technical Director Austin Eguavoen pledged to scout talents for the national youth teams, while former NSC chief Dr Amos Adamu called on sponsors to support the annual event.

The tournament will bring together young players from all walks of life, offering them a chance to dream big, compete fiercely, and perhaps one day wear the green and white jersey.
