Lagos Free Zone promotes science education youth development through its 2025 Tolaram Science Challenge with 16 schools competing in Ibeju-Lekki

Science education youth development remains at the heart of Lagos Free Zone’s commitment to community transformation, as it concluded the 2025 edition of its flagship Tolaram Science Challenge with a resounding success.

Sixteen secondary schools from across the Ibeju-Lekki axis of Lagos converged for the annual competition, which tested students’ skills in physics, chemistry, biology, mathematics, and general knowledge.

Iwerekun Community Senior High School, Lakowe, emerged overall winners for the second year running, affirming their dominance in the science-based contest.

In a statement, the Chief Sustainability Officer of Lagos Free Zone, Vishal Shah, said the initiative is designed to inspire science education youth development by empowering students with the tools and mindset for innovation.

“We have seen students transform waste into opportunities, rethink everyday materials, and present solutions with the potential to reshape how communities manage resources. These young minds have shown us that the future of our planet is in capable hands,” Shah noted.

Iwerekun Community Senior High School beat Ibeju Senior High School, Ibeju Agbe, to first place.

Community Senior Secondary School, Akodo/Orofun, and Community Senior High School, Idata/Ilagbo, secured third and fourth positions, respectively.

This back-to-back victory is a testament to our hard work, consistency, and the unwavering support of our teachers.

Top performers were rewarded with cash prizes and Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination scholarships to further support their academic goals.

Ashish Khemka, Director of Finance and Operations at Lagos Free Zone, said the science competition aligns with LFZ’s larger ambition to contribute to national progress.

“Our focus on science is deliberate, as we believe it plays a critical role in driving innovation and supporting the country’s journey toward industrialisation,” Khemka said.

“We plan to reach 20 schools next year, after which we will scale it to the state and eventually national level.”

The challenge also drew participation from Community Senior Secondary School, Debojo; Royal Triple Dee School, Ibeju Lekki; Igbogun Senior High School, Igbogun; Magbon-Alade Senior Grammar School; Eagle Vision College, Orofun, and others, reflecting growing enthusiasm for science competitions across the region.

Team captain of Iwerekun Community Senior High School, Anthony Abednego, said the victory was the result of hard work and team unity.

“This back-to-back victory is a testament to our hard work, consistency, and the unwavering support of our teachers,” Abednego said.
