Senegal face Mali in a tense AFCON quarter-final in Tanger as both sides chase a semi-final place at Morocco 2025

Reigning champions Senegal will confront Mali in a keenly anticipated quarter-final clash at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations at the Grand Stade de Tanger on Wednesday evening, with kick-off scheduled for 5.00pm Nigerian time.

Mali booked their place in the last eight after edging Tunisia 3-2 on penalties at the Stade Mohammed V in Casablanca on Saturday.

The Round of 16 encounter ended 1-1 after regulation time, with the tie extending into extra time before spot-kicks were required to separate both sides.

Misses from Elias Achouri and Mohamed Ali Ben Romdhane proved costly for Tunisia, allowing Mali to seal progression and maintain their push for a first continental title.

Senegal, known as the Lions of Teranga, enjoyed a more commanding route into the quarter-finals.

The defending champions recorded a 3-1 victory over Sudan at the Stade de Tanger last Saturday, despite conceding an early goal.

Sudan stunned Senegal in the sixth minute through Aamir Yunis, but the champions responded with authority.

Pape Gueye struck twice, while Ibrahim Mbaye added a third to complete a resilient comeback and underline Senegal’s tournament pedigree.

Speaking after the win, Senegal captain Sadio Mane stressed the importance of composure and focus as the competition intensifies.

The experienced forward said Africa Cup of Nations matches are often decided by fine margins rather than dominance.

Sadio Mane noted that while Senegal are among the contenders to lift the trophy again, experience has taught him that consistency and calm decision-making are crucial in knockout football.

He added that winning, rather than performance style, must now be the priority.
