Dr Nonye Soludo calls for practical measures and collective responsibility as Nigeria confronts rising Nigeria gender violence

The wife of the Anambra State Governor, Dr Nonye Soludo, has called for collective responsibility, stronger advocacy, and practical interventions to combat Nigeria gender violence, warning that the crisis cannot be addressed through rhetoric alone.

Dr Soludo, who founded Healthy Living with Nonye Soludo, made the remarks in a statement marking the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.

She noted that the day also begins the annual 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, which runs until 10 December, Human Rights Day.

She stressed that awareness campaigns must be matched with concrete action, insisting that women and girls require safe environments, accessible education, reliable healthcare, and meaningful job opportunities to break cycles of vulnerability.

She added that stronger social institutions remain essential in transforming the current narrative.

Dr Soludo described silence as a major barrier to justice for survivors, urging victims and witnesses to speak up and report abuse to appropriate authorities.

She said every household, school, workplace, and community has a duty to challenge discrimination wherever it appears.

The Anambra First Lady noted that the state government has taken steps to address the issue and is shifting public perception through policy reforms and community engagement.

She emphasised that eliminating violence against women demands courage, persistence, and a unified national effort.

Her message aligns with a recent statement by the First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, who warned about rising offline and online threats to women and girls, including digital harassment and exploitation.
