Doubts had lingered over the venue after concerns were raised about the pitch conditions, but fresh inspections by both governing bodies confirmed encouraging progress, leading to the green light.

“Considering the encouraging progress observed on the pitch, both organisations have agreed that the matches will proceed as originally scheduled at the Free State Stadium,” FIFA and CAF stated jointly.

Ahead of the clash with Nigeria, the stadium will host Lesotho’s home tie against a fellow southern African side on September 5, as Lesotho lacks a FIFA-standard venue.

The crunch fixture between South Africa and Nigeria will then take place on September 9. Bafana Bafana lead the group with 13 points from six matches, while Eric Chelle’s Super Eagles sit fourth on seven points, trailing Rwanda and Benin Republic.
