Super Falcons Begin WAFCON Camp on July 15 as Nigeria prepares to defend its title and secure a place at the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup

The Super Falcons of Nigeria will begin their final preparations for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) on July 15 when the record 10-time African champions open a week-long training camp in Mohammedia, Morocco.

The camp represents the final phase of Nigeria’s build-up as the team prepares to defend the continental title they won in 2025. The tournament, scheduled to run from July 25 to August 16, will also serve as a pathway to the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.

Head coach Justine Madugu is expected to announce his final 24-player squad before the team’s departure, having previously brought the players together for a double-header friendly against Senegal in June.

The Morocco camp will provide the coaching staff with an important opportunity to sharpen tactical plans, strengthen team understanding and improve the players’ physical readiness before the squad moves to Rabat for the tournament.

Nigeria have been drawn in Group C alongside Malawi, Zambia and Egypt. The Super Falcons will begin their title defence against tournament debutants Malawi on Tuesday, July 28, at the Al Madina Stadium in Rabat.

Their second group match will be against Zambia on Saturday, August 1, at the same venue before they conclude the group stage against Egypt on Wednesday, August 5, at the Olympic Stadium.

Nigeria enter the competition as the most successful team in WAFCON history, having won the title 10 times.

The squad will be aiming to maintain that dominance while securing qualification for the 2027 Women’s World Cup.

Meanwhile, opening opponents Malawi have made changes to their technical team ahead of their first-ever appearance at the tournament.

The Football Association of Malawi (FAM) appointed experienced South African coach Sudesh Singh as technical adviser to meet Confederation of African Football (CAF) coaching requirements.

CAF regulations require tournament head coaches to hold a CAF A Coaching Licence, a qualification Malawi head coach Lovemore Fazili does not currently possess.

Under the arrangement, Singh will occupy the official lead coaching position during matches, while Fazili will continue handling tactical decisions, team selection and overall squad management.

Malawi have also added Tyrese Steyn to their backroom staff as performance analyst, with responsibilities including opposition scouting, match analysis and the collection of performance data throughout the competition.

With the tournament approaching, Nigeria’s preparations will be closely monitored as the Super Falcons seek another historic campaign on the African stage.
