Ter Stegen World Cup doubt grows as Nagelsmann says injury-hit goalkeeper is unlikely to make Germany’s squad this summer

Julian Nagelsmann has cast serious doubt over Marc-Andre Ter Stegen’s participation in this summer’s World Cup, citing the goalkeeper’s prolonged injury struggles and limited match fitness.

Speaking ahead of Germany’s international friendly against Ghana on Monday, Nagelsmann said the chances of Ter Stegen making the squad were “very, very, very slim” following a difficult year marked by injury setbacks.

The 33-year-old, currently contracted to FC Barcelona and on loan at Girona FC, underwent surgery in February for a torn hamstring, adding to a series of fitness concerns that have disrupted his career.

Nagelsmann revealed he had spoken with the goalkeeper earlier in the week but stressed that the reality of his long absence from competitive football would weigh heavily on selection decisions.

“He didn’t play for a year and then got injured. He’s been out for a year, so to speak, and played very little,” the coach said, urging patience as Ter Stegen continues his rehabilitation.

Ter Stegen had stepped into the role of Germany’s first-choice goalkeeper following the international retirement of Manuel Neuer after Euro 2024, ending years as the veteran’s understudy.

However, his absence has opened the door for other contenders, with Oliver Baumann of TSG Hoffenheim starting in Germany’s recent 4-3 friendly victory over Switzerland.

Despite earlier backing Ter Stegen as the leading candidate as recently as February, Nagelsmann acknowledged that time and match readiness are now critical factors working against the experienced shot-stopper.

The coach maintained a hopeful tone but emphasised realism, noting that the player must focus fully on recovery while the national team prepares for the tournament.
