Trinity Rodman becomes the world’s highest-paid female footballer after signing a record-breaking contract with Washington Spirit

Washington Spirit forward Trinity Rodman has become the world’s highest-paid female footballer after signing a new three-year contract with the club, her agent confirmed on Friday.

Trinity Rodman, 23, had been a free agent since her previous deal with Washington Spirit expired on December 31, 2025.

The new agreement is reportedly worth about 2 million dollars per year, including bonuses, and will keep her with the National Women’s Soccer League side until 2028.

BBC Sport reported that the deal represents a historic milestone in women’s football earnings.

Rodman described the agreement as “amazing,” calling it a “monumental and game-changing moment” for her career and the sport.

The contract surpasses previous salary benchmarks set by Barcelona and Spain midfielder Aitana Bonmatí, the Ballon d’Or winner in 2023, 2024 and 2025, who had been regarded as the highest-earning female footballer.

Rodman’s new deal follows the introduction of the NWSL’s High Impact Player rule in December 2025, which allows clubs to spend up to one million dollars above the salary cap on elite players.

The league’s team salary cap for the 2025 season stood at 3.5 million dollars.

Washington Spirit owner Michele Kang praised Rodman’s impact, describing her as both a generational talent and a symbol of the club’s ambition.

Kang said Rodman represents “the future of this club and the future of women’s soccer.”

Rodman joined the Spirit in 2021 and helped the club secure the NWSL Championship in her debut season, earning Rookie of the Year honours.

At international level, she has made 47 appearances for the United States, scoring 11 goals since her senior debut in 2022.

She also played a decisive role at the 2024 Paris Olympics, scoring three goals as the United States won the gold medal.

Rodman is the daughter of former NBA star Dennis Rodman, a five-time NBA champion with the Detroit Pistons and Chicago Bulls, but has forged her own powerful identity as one of the most influential figures in women’s football.
