Fully funded master’s programme offers Nigerians and other eligible professionals the opportunity to study in the United Kingdom
The United Kingdom Government has announced that applications for the 2026 Chevening Scholarship will open on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, inviting Nigerians and other eligible candidates to apply for fully funded one-year master’s degree programmes at universities across the UK.
The scholarship, funded by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office and partner organisations, is designed for professionals who have demonstrated leadership potential and a commitment to driving positive change in their communities. Applications will remain open until October 6, 2026.
The UK Opens 2026 Chevening Scholarship programme offers successful candidates comprehensive financial support, covering tuition fees, living expenses, travel costs and access to one of the world’s largest professional leadership networks.
Established in 1983, the Chevening Scholarship is the UK Government’s flagship international scholarship programme.
Over the past four decades, it has supported more than 60,000 professionals from over 140 countries and territories, many of whom have gone on to hold influential positions in government, business, academia and civil society.
According to the UK Government, the scholarship is intended to identify individuals with outstanding leadership qualities who can use the knowledge, skills and international connections gained during their studies to contribute meaningfully to development in their home countries.
Successful applicants will receive full tuition for an eligible one-year taught master’s degree, a monthly living allowance, return economy airfare to the UK, arrival and departure allowances, travel grants for approved Chevening events and lifelong membership of the global Chevening alumni network.
The programme is open to professionals who demonstrate strong leadership and influencing skills, possess excellent networking abilities and show a clear commitment to creating lasting positive impact in their communities.
Applicants must also satisfy the academic and general eligibility requirements for the scholarship.
The UK Government has encouraged applications from under-represented groups as part of its broader commitment to diversity and inclusion.
Prospective Nigerian applicants are expected to register through the official Chevening online application portal from August 4, complete the eligibility checker and obtain a unique application access code before beginning the application process.
Candidates will be required to provide their personal details, educational background and professional experience, select three eligible master’s degree courses at UK universities, submit details of two referees and complete essay questions focusing on leadership, networking, study objectives and career ambitions.
Applicants have also been advised to prepare their essays in advance using a separate document and save their work regularly while completing the online application, as inactive sessions on the portal automatically expire.
According to the published timetable, applications will be reviewed from October 2026, while shortlisted candidates will be invited for interviews between March and April 2027.
Successful applicants are expected to receive notification by mid-June 2027, with studies commencing in September or October 2027.
Selection will be based on leadership potential, academic achievement, professional experience, networking ability and a demonstrated commitment to creating sustainable impact both locally and globally.
The announcement comes as demand for international postgraduate scholarships continues to grow among Nigerian graduates seeking advanced education and leadership opportunities abroad.
Chevening remains one of the most competitive and prestigious UK-funded scholarship programmes, attracting thousands of applications worldwide each year because of its comprehensive funding package and emphasis on developing future leaders.
The UK Government has urged prospective applicants to begin preparations early, carefully review the eligibility criteria and submit complete applications before the closing date to maximise their chances of success.
