Sa’adu Zungur University secures NUC approval for new undergraduate and postgraduate courses ahead of the 2026/2027 academic session

Sa’adu Zungur University (SAZU) has secured approval from the National Universities Commission (NUC) to introduce 12 new undergraduate and postgraduate academic programmes, marking a significant expansion of the institution’s academic offerings ahead of the 2026/2027 academic session.

The SAZU New Programmes were approved following a comprehensive resource verification exercise by the NUC, which assessed the university’s academic staff strength, physical infrastructure, laboratories, library resources and other facilities required to sustain the proposed courses.

The development was announced in a statement issued on Tuesday by the university’s Public Relations Officer, Auwal Hassan, who disclosed that the approval was conveyed in a letter dated June 15, 2026.

According to the statement, the newly approved undergraduate programmes are B.A. (Ed.) Arabic, B.A. (Ed.) Hausa, B.A. (Ed.) Islamic Studies, B.A. Sharia, B.Sc. Social Work, B.Sc. (Ed.) Agricultural Science, B.Sc. (Ed.) Human Kinetics and B.Sc. (Ed.) Health Education.

The commission also approved several postgraduate programmes, including Master of Education (Educational Management), Doctor of Business Administration, Postgraduate Diploma, LL.M. and Ph.D. Law, as well as Postgraduate Diploma, M.Sc. and Ph.D. Sociology.

Reacting to the approval, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Fatimah Tahir, described the decision as a strong endorsement of the university’s commitment to academic excellence, institutional development and compliance with the NUC’s regulatory standards.

Professor Tahir said the expansion aligns with the university’s long-term vision of increasing access to quality higher education while strengthening research, innovation and the production of graduates equipped to address contemporary national and global challenges.

“The approval reinforces Sa’adu Zungur University’s position as one of Nigeria’s emerging public universities committed to academic excellence, impactful research, innovation and community service.

“The university remains steadfast in its mission of producing competent graduates, advancing knowledge through research and contributing meaningfully to the socioeconomic development of Bauchi State, Nigeria and the global community,” she said.

The vice-chancellor thanked the NUC for expressing confidence in the university’s capacity to deliver the newly approved programmes and pledged that the institution would maintain the standards upon which the approvals were granted.

She also expressed appreciation to Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed, who serves as the university’s Visitor, for his sustained support for higher education through continued investment in infrastructure, academic development and institutional growth.

Professor Tahir further commended the university’s Governing Council, Senate, management, academic and non-academic staff for their collective efforts during the NUC resource assessment exercise, describing the approval as the result of teamwork and dedication.

She assured prospective students, parents and other stakeholders that the university would provide the necessary human and material resources required to implement the programmes effectively in accordance with the commission’s quality assurance guidelines.

The latest approvals continue a broader trend of Nigerian universities expanding their academic portfolios in response to growing demand for specialised education and evolving labour market needs.

Before granting approval for new programmes, the NUC conducts rigorous resource verification exercises to ensure institutions possess adequate staffing, infrastructure and learning facilities capable of sustaining quality teaching and research.
