Speaking at the Federal Ministry of Works headquarters in Abuja, Senator David Umahi praised the former president’s decisive role in shaping Ebonyi State politics.

According to him, Buhari ensured that Francis Nwifuru succeeded him as governor, despite opposition from within their party.

“He supported us. I can’t forget,” Umahi said. “Even when the enemies of progress tried to stop the emergence of my present governor, he stepped in.”

Beyond politics, the Umahi tribute to Buhari also revealed personal moments shared with the ex-president. Umahi fondly recalled how Buhari adored Abakaliki rice, which he regularly sent during and after Buhari’s time in office.

“When I sent that Abakaliki rice to him, he called me and said, ‘I am not missing Abakaliki rice even when I am out of office,’” Umahi shared.

He described Buhari as a leader who was fair, humorous, and deeply selfless. The minister recounted how the late president worked tirelessly while visiting Ebonyi, inaugurating projects from morning till night.

“At 10pm, after commissioning projects all day, he said to me, ‘You know how to punish someone very well.’ I replied, ‘But sir, you signed for it.’”

The Umahi tribute to Buhari also highlighted how, despite having an airport named after him, Buhari humbly renamed it in honour of the late Senator Chuba Okadigbo. Umahi called this act the ultimate display of humility.

Reflecting on Buhari’s legacy, Umahi said he expected the former president to live to see his 100th birthday because of his rare human qualities.
