Virgil van Dijk has described Liverpool’s campaign as “unacceptable” following their 3-2 defeat to Manchester United at Old Trafford, admitting the team has fallen below expected standards.

The Liverpool captain spoke after the latest setback, which marked their 18th defeat in all competitions and deepened concerns over their inconsistent form under manager Arne Slot.

Van Dijk said there were no excuses for the team’s struggles, stressing that the players must take full responsibility for the disappointing season.

He urged the squad to respond strongly and ensure similar performances are not repeated in the future, adding that the situation does not reflect the club’s identity or expectations.

Despite a brief run of improved results earlier in the season, Liverpool have now suffered 11 league defeats, a rare record for a side defending the Premier League title.

The Dutch defender also highlighted the importance of finishing the season strongly to secure UEFA Champions League qualification, noting both sporting and financial implications for the club.
