Wayne Rooney praises Max Dowman after the Arsenal teenager became the youngest Premier League goalscorer in history

Former Manchester United and England striker Wayne Rooney has praised teenage winger Max Dowman after the 16-year-old made Premier League history with a record-breaking goal for Arsenal F.C..

Max Dowman became the youngest goalscorer in Premier League history when he found the net in Arsenal’s 2–0 victory over Everton F.C., a result that moved the North London club nine points clear at the top of the table.

Wayne Rooney, who previously held the record after scoring for Everton against Arsenal in 2002 at the age of 16, described the achievement as remarkable and predicted a bright future for the youngster.

“He could be a Premier League winner when he’s still finishing school off,” Wayne Rooney said during an appearance on The Wayne Rooney Show on Monday.

Despite the historic moment, Wayne Rooney noted that Max Dowman may have to balance his football career with academic commitments in the coming weeks.

The former England captain pointed out that the young Arsenal winger is currently preparing for his GCSE examinations.

“He has got his GCSEs and his education, which I’m sure for him and his family is important as well,” Wayne Rooney said.

“If it’s education first, I don’t think we’ll see much of him over the next few weeks,” Wayne Rooney added.

Wayne Rooney, however, expressed confidence that Max Dowman possesses the mentality required to succeed at the highest level of English football.

The former striker said the teenager already shows strong self-belief and composure on the pitch.

“He’s got an aura and a belief about him,” Wayne Rooney said. “What an opportunity for him to be around the squad. Even if he’s not involved as much as he’d like, he’s got many years ahead of him.”

Wayne Rooney also reflected on his own early breakthrough in the Premier League, recalling that he earned just £75 a week when he scored his famous goal for Everton against Arsenal as a 16-year-old.

According to Wayne Rooney, life quickly returned to normal after the historic moment.

“I was back out playing with my mates on the streets after the game,” Wayne Rooney said.
