The Nigeria international, already club captain, has now been entrusted with a broader role as the club enters a transformative phase under US-based Harburg Group.

Troost-Ekong, who joined Al Kholood in August 2024 from Greek side PAOK, played an instrumental part in guiding the newly promoted club to a solid ninth-place finish last season.

His commanding performances and presence off the pitch earned him the captaincy — but his influence is now set to go even further.

The 32-year-old centre-back is being positioned as a stabilising force during the club’s transition, becoming the first foreign-owned team in the Saudi top flight.

Harburg Group chairman, Ben Harburg, described the Nigerian as a “tremendous human being” and a cornerstone of their vision.

“To have someone like William Troost-Ekong on my team is a dream come true,” Harburg told the SPL. “He’s seen everything, played everywhere, and his maturity and leadership are absolutely essential during this handover.”

Troost-Ekong’s role now includes acting as a cultural bridge between the players, management, and new ownership, as well as helping the club engage with fans in Nigeria and globally.

Al Kholood’s investment signals a bold new direction in Saudi football, and William Troost-Ekong’s leadership is clearly seen as a critical asset in navigating the challenges ahead.
