Super Eagles World Cup qualifiers 2026 begin with early arrivals as Troost-Ekong, Obasogie, and Onyemaechi report to camp for Rwanda, South Africa ties

Super Eagles World Cup qualifiers 2026 preparations kicked off in Uyo on Monday as team captain William Troost-Ekong led a trio of early arrivals ahead of Nigeria’s must-win fixtures against Rwanda and South Africa.

According to PUNCH Sports Extra, Troost-Ekong was joined by Tanzania-based goalkeeper Amas Obasogie and Olympiacos left-back Bruno Onyemaechi, as the Super Eagles officially opened camp for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying matches.

The rest of the 23-man squad is expected to join later on Monday, with several players arriving late due to deadline day transfers, including Samuel Chukwueze, Tolu Arokodare, and Chrisantus Uche.

Nigeria faces Rwanda on Saturday in Uyo before traveling to Bloemfontein to take on Group C leaders South Africa three days later.

Both fixtures are critical, with Nigeria currently sitting fourth in the group with seven points, trailing South Africa by six.

Group standings after six games:

•  South Africa – 13 pts
• Rwanda – 8 pts
• Benin Republic – 8 pts
•  Nigeria – 7 pts
•  Lesotho – 6 pts
•  Zimbabwe – 4 pts

With just four matchdays remaining, every point counts.

Nigeria will wrap up the group stage in October with games against Lesotho (away) and Benin Republic (home).

Head coach Eric Chelle has confirmed his final 23-man list, with Troost-Ekong, Stanley Nwabali, and Victor Boniface among the key names.

However, Boniface’s inclusion remains uncertain, with earlier reports suggesting he may be unavailable.

The team is under pressure to close the gap, especially amid potential disciplinary action involving South Africa’s use of an ineligible player, which could alter the group standings.

The Super Eagles need back-to-back wins in September to stay alive in the race to North America 2026.
