Woli Arole condemns Christian BDSM in marriage, saying the practice is spiritually wrong even between couples, sparking debate across social media platforms

Popular Nigerian comedian-turned-pastor, Woli Arole, has sparked a heated debate online after firmly condemning the practice of BDSM among Christians, even when done within marriage.

Known for his blend of humour and spiritual insight, Arole took to Instagram to share his unambiguous stance on a subject many shy away from in religious circles.

He revealed that he had recently been asked a provocative question: whether it is acceptable for married Christian couples to practise BDSM. Without hesitation, Arole gave a resolute response.

“I was asked, ‘Can a Christian do BDSM in marriage?’ My own answer is NO,” he wrote.

BDSM, an acronym for bondage, discipline, dominance, submission, and sadomasochism, has gained more public attention through pop culture and media over the years.

Yet Arole’s spiritual rejection of it within Christian marriages has reignited a deeper conversation on how faith intersects with sexuality and marital intimacy.

While some followers praised Arole for speaking boldly about what they see as a moral issue, others criticised him for overreaching into the private affairs of married couples.

Some argued that the Bible does not explicitly mention such practices, while others maintained that anything viewed as violent, degrading, or linked to control is incompatible with Christian values.

Another responded with dissent: “What two married adults consent to in private isn’t for outsiders to judge. Let’s not pretend Christianity bans everything we don’t understand.”

“We cannot dilute the Word of God to accommodate modern lusts,” he added in a comment beneath the original post.

A pastor from Ibadan who follows Arole wrote: “We need more voices like this. The sanctity of marriage must be preserved.”
