In a statement released by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), Osinbajo — a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) — was confirmed to lead the mission for the Ivorian presidential election, scheduled for 25 October 2025.

The observation team will be on ground in Côte d’Ivoire from 19 to 29 October, in line with the ECOWAS Supplementary Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance.

“As Head of Mission, Osinbajo will lead a delegation of eminent West Africans who will engage with key national stakeholders to encourage a peaceful and credible electoral process,” ECOWAS announced.

The delegation is also expected to collaborate with international and domestic observer groups to assess the election’s fairness and transparency.

This marks a significant moment for the region, as West Africa faces heightened political sensitivity with multiple nations approaching major elections.

The deployment of the mission signals ECOWAS’ continued emphasis on promoting democratic values and electoral credibility across its member states.

Yemi Osinbajo ECOWAS appointment comes at a time when the region is grappling with democratic backsliding in some quarters, while other nations work to consolidate civilian rule and stability.

Osinbajo’s new role has been praised by observers who cite his constitutional background and calm diplomatic style as ideal for engaging with both government institutions and civil society during high-stakes electoral periods.
