Children’s parliament Katsina urges the state government to domesticate Nigeria’s violence-free school policy to ensure safer, supportive learning environments

Children’s parliament Katsina has made a strong call for the state government to domesticate the National Policy on Violence-Free Schools, Safety, and Security, emphasizing the urgent need to protect students from violence and threats within educational spaces.

At a plenary held Monday at the Katsina State House of Assembly, the 34-member parliament—supported by Save the Children International—adopted several motions targeting safety, inclusion, and climate resilience.

The sitting was presided over by Fadila Sani, the Speaker of the Children’s Parliament.

The key motion, sponsored by Halimatu Idris representing Malumfashi, urged the state to adopt the national school safety policy to make learning environments secure and supportive.

“Without safety in schools, education and future development remain at risk,” Idris argued. “Children cannot thrive in fear. We need policies that work for us.”

She added that insecurity, abuse, and violence in schools continue to hinder children’s ability to learn and develop, especially in vulnerable communities.

Two additional motions highlighted broader child protection issues.

Asiya Rabe of Maiadua constituency called on the state to accelerate the implementation of the Child Protection Law, Disability Law, and the Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) Act.

“Children, women, and people with disabilities deserve legal protection,” she said. “These laws must move from paper to action.”

Meanwhile, Asiya Ridwan from Dutsi drew attention to the pressing issue of climate change, urging the government to create a state-wide anticipatory action plan to mitigate its effects on already vulnerable communities.

After a series of passionate deliberations, the Children’s Parliament adopted the motions and formally urged the Katsina State Government to take immediate steps toward implementation.

The sitting was supported by Save the Children International (SCI) through its Education Cannot Wait-funded programme—an initiative designed to ensure inclusive and equitable education in crisis-affected regions.
