United Nigeria signs major aircraft deal with Southwest Airlines for six Boeing 737-800s, boosting aviation growth and fleet capacity

United Nigeria, one of the country’s fast-growing carriers, has signed a landmark agreement with US-based Southwest Airlines for the acquisition of six Boeing 737-800 aircraft, marking a major leap in its fleet expansion and regional ambitions.

The deal was officially sealed during a high-level ceremony at Southwest Airlines’ headquarters in Dallas, Texas, and aims to strengthen United Nigeria’s operations across domestic, regional, and international routes.

According to a statement released on Sunday, the addition of the Boeing 737-800 jets—known for their fuel efficiency, passenger comfort, and operational performance—will significantly boost United Nigeria’s capacity while reducing costs.

“This is a step further. After four years of consistent and reliable operations, upgrading to the Boeing 737-800 allows us to scale our services profitably,” said Prof. Obiora Okonkwo, Executive Chairman of United Nigeria Airlines.

The aircraft can seat up to 189 passengers and cover a range of approximately 2,935 nautical miles, making it ideal for medium-haul routes across Africa and beyond.

The agreement also includes a long-term strategic partnership with Southwest Airlines.

Under the deal, United Nigeria will receive technical support, including maintenance assistance and crew training, ensuring a safe and smooth integration of the new jets into its operations.

“We will benefit from continued technical cooperation that reinforces safety and operational excellence,” Okonkwo said.

This latest acquisition is just the beginning. United Nigeria has expressed interest in four additional Boeing 737-800 NG aircraft, with total fleet expansion to 10 aircraft between Q1 2026 and Q1 2027.

“We can now operate more direct flights, eliminate long layovers, and improve passenger experience—all while maintaining competitive fares,” the airline boss added.

Okonkwo also highlighted the broader economic implications, noting that the move aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s economic growth goals.

“This upgrade will create direct and indirect jobs in Nigeria and support aviation as a driver of national development,” he said.

Anbessie Yitbarek, Vice President of Commercial Sales and Marketing for Boeing Africa, praised the partnership:

“We are pleased to welcome United Nigeria Airlines to the 737 family. This aircraft provides the fuel efficiency and reliability needed in today’s competitive aviation environment.”

Discussions are reportedly ongoing for deeper collaboration, with Southwest Airlines expected to continue playing a support role even after the delivery phase is complete.
