Nigeria vs Mozambique AFCON clash as Super Eagles seek quarter-final spot and push for a fourth continental title

Nigeria will continue the Nigeria vs Mozambique AFCON campaign on Monday when the Super Eagles face Mozambique in the Africa Cup of Nations round of 16 at the Fez Stadium.

Victory would secure Nigeria’s 12th quarter-final appearance and extend their record for last-eight finishes, placing them ahead of Egypt.

Mozambique, meanwhile, have reached the AFCON knockout stage for the first time in six attempts.

Nigeria remain unbeaten against the Mambas in five previous meetings, winning four and drawing one.

Their only AFCON encounter came in 2010, when Nigeria claimed a commanding 3–0 group-stage victory through goals from Peter Odemwingie and Obafemi Martins.

The Super Eagles also edged Mozambique 3–2 in an international friendly in October 2023.

Nigeria entered the knockout phase with a dominant group-stage showing.

They won all three matches against Tanzania, Tunisia and Uganda.

The team scored eight goals and conceded four, recording their highest AFCON group tally.

Nigeria’s total AFCON wins now stand at 61, just one behind Egypt’s all-time record.

They have also scored in 10 consecutive tournament matches.

Ademola Lookman has emerged as a key performer.

He has scored twice and provided two assists, earning selection in the group-stage Best XI.

Victor Osimhen is expected to lead the attack.

The striker has scored 32 goals in 49 appearances for Nigeria.

Captain Wilfred Ndidi, alongside Alex Iwobi and Raphael Onyedika, anchors the midfield.

Semi Ajayi and Bright Osayi-Samuel are set to return to the starting line-up.

Lookman said the team remain focused despite early success.

“We have set targets to accomplish here in Morocco, and we are nowhere near those targets yet,” he said.

Mozambique qualified for the knockout stage after securing their first-ever AFCON finals win against Gabon.

They also scored against Cameroon but lost 2–1 in their final group match.

The team is coached by Chiquinho Conde and captained by Domingues.

Defenders Nené, Bruno Langa and Reinildo Mandava provide stability at the back.

Chamito, Faisal Bangal and João Bonde lead the attack.

Geny Catamo has already scored in consecutive AFCON matches, a historic achievement for Mozambique.

Cameroonian referee Abdou Abdel Mefir will officiate the match.

He will be assisted by Elvis Noupoue and Carine Atezambong.

Nigeria head coach Eric Chelle urged calm and discipline.

“We will not get ahead of ourselves,” Chelle said.
