Chelle says his Super Eagles future depends on the NFF after Nigeria’s AFCON semi-final loss to Morocco

Super Eagles head coach Éric Chelle has said his future with Nigeria’s senior national team depends entirely on the Nigeria Football Federation, following the team’s exit from the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

The 48-year-old coach was appointed in January 2025 on a two-year contract, with a mandate to guide Nigeria to the final of the continental tournament.

Nigeria’s campaign ended at the semi-final stage on Wednesday night after a tense 4–2 penalty shootout defeat to hosts Morocco at the Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat.

Speaking after the match, Chelle said he remained willing to continue working with the team but acknowledged that the final decision rested with the NFF.

“My future, I don’t know for now. I am the coach of Nigeria at this moment, but it depends on whether the NFF want me to continue or not,” Chelle said.

He added that discussions with the football authorities would take place after the tournament concludes.

“The tournament is not over yet. After the AFCON, I will meet with the NFF and we will decide the next step,” he stated.

Despite falling short of the final, Nigeria’s run to the semi-finals revived optimism around the team, with government officials and fans praising the Super Eagles for their resilience and competitive display throughout the tournament.
