Sokoto police arrest Sule Gurmu for allegedly killing his wife in Kebbi, following a joint manhunt by security agencies and local government directive

The Sokoto State Police Command has arrested Sule Gurmu, the man accused of killing his wife, Umaima Maidawa, in Augie Local Government Area of Kebbi State.

The alleged domestic violence incident shocked the Bayawa community.

Gurmu was apprehended on Saturday in Katami town, Silame Local Government Area of Sokoto, following a directive from Augie Local Government Chairman, Hon. Yahaya Muhammad Augie, who ordered immediate action by security agencies.

The arrest was carried out through a joint operation involving the Nigeria Police and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, following days of investigation and a coordinated manhunt.

Hon. Augie visited the Bayawa crime scene and supervised the transfer of the victim’s body to Argungu General Hospital for autopsy.

He condemned the killing as “abhorrent and unacceptable” and reaffirmed that his administration will not tolerate domestic violence or criminality.

Residents of Bayawa have expressed grief and called for swift justice, while civil society organisations in Kebbi State continue to advocate for increased awareness and preventive measures against domestic violence, particularly in rural communities.

SP Bashir Usman, spokesman for the Kebbi State Police Command, confirmed the arrest and said a detailed briefing will be provided at an appropriate time.
