Ajegunle fire incident razes shopping complex, destroying goods worth millions of naira; emergency responders contained the blaze

A fire outbreak in the early hours of Thursday razed a one-storey shopping complex and surrounding shops along Amore Street, Ajegunle Boundary, Lagos, destroying goods valued at millions of naira.

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency confirmed the incident at 2:40 a.m., triggering an immediate activation of emergency response plans from its Cappa Base in Oshodi.

According to a preliminary report signed by LASEMA Permanent Secretary, Dr. Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu, responders arrived at the scene by 3:22 a.m. and found active flames engulfing the complex, which housed multiple clothing dealers.

“The high volume of combustible materials contributed to the rapid spread of the intense fire,” the agency noted, adding that nearby shops used for storage and sales were also affected.

Preliminary investigations suggest that a power surge following the restoration of public electricity triggered the blaze. LASEMA confirmed that no casualties or injuries occurred.

Emergency responders conducted a risk assessment, cordoned off the area, and implemented safety measures to prevent further damage.

Fire-fighting operations successfully contained the blaze within the affected zone, while damping-down activities continue to prevent re-ignition.

“The entire shopping complex and surrounding stores were completely razed. All goods and properties stored therein were destroyed,” the agency said, emphasising that parts of the structure require immediate structural assessment.

LASEMA urged commercial property owners in the area to review fire safety measures and storage protocols to prevent similar incidents in the future.
