Former Nigeria head coach José Peseiro has declared that Ademola Lookman has grown to rival Victor Osimhen in influence with the Super Eagles and possesses the quality to become a defining figure at Atlético Madrid.

José Peseiro made the remarks in an interview with Marca, stating that while Victor Osimhen has long been regarded as Nigeria’s leading figure, Ademola Lookman’s recent performances have been equally decisive.

“Osimhen was the star, but Lookman has not been behind him. In fact, he has scored more goals. Now they are both key figures,” José Peseiro said, citing the forward’s hat trick in the Europa League final for Atalanta as further proof of his impact at club level.

The Peseiro Lookman Osimhen rivalry discussion has intensified following Ademola Lookman’s standout displays at successive Africa Cup of Nations tournaments.

Ademola Lookman directly contributed to 11 goals in 13 appearances, scoring six and assisting five, as Nigeria secured silver and bronze medals.

José Peseiro, who offered Ademola Lookman consistent opportunities during his tenure, dismissed suggestions that the forward is difficult to manage.

José Peseiro described Ademola Lookman as grounded and responsive when trusted with freedom on the pitch.

“Lookman does not act like a star, he is very easy to manage, you just have to let him be free,” José Peseiro said.

José Peseiro argued that Ademola Lookman’s early impression in Spain underlined his composure and talent.

José Peseiro urged patience as the player adapts but insisted the signs are compelling.

“Playing like that three days after arriving can only be explained by his quality. Now we must remain calm because he still needs to adapt, but it is already clear that he does not feel pressure,” José Peseiro said.

José Peseiro described the transfer to Atlético Madrid as a pivotal stage in Ademola Lookman’s career and said the move fulfils a long held ambition to compete at Europe’s highest level.

The former Nigeria coach also revealed that conversations in 2022 helped lay the foundation for the forward’s resurgence.

At the time, Ademola Lookman had struggled for stability after spells at Everton, RB Leipzig, Fulham and Leicester City.

José Peseiro said Ademola Lookman had spoken openly about his disappointment after falling out of favour with England’s youth set up despite winning the Under 20 World Cup in 2017.

Now approaching his peak years, Ademola Lookman has added defensive discipline and physical strength to his attacking qualities, according to José Peseiro.

The Portuguese coach said the demands of Italian football accelerated that growth.

“He has become more mature and complete. He can shoot, pass and beat opponents one against one. He has also improved greatly defensively and physically,” José Peseiro said.
