West African universities, including UCC and University of Ibadan, gain global recognition in 2026 rankings

West African universities are increasingly gaining international recognition, with several institutions from Ghana, Nigeria, and Senegal achieving higher positions in the 2026 global university rankings.

The University of Cape Coast in Ghana emerged among the region’s top performers, securing a place in the 801-1000 band of the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2026.

The ranking reflects UCC’s improved research quality, citation impact, and growing international collaborations.

Similarly, the University of Ghana, Legon, maintained its position as a leading research-intensive institution in the region, excelling in graduate employability and international research networks according to the QS World University Rankings 2026.

Nigeria’s University of Ibadan also featured in the 801-1000 bracket of THE’s rankings, highlighting its longstanding strengths across medicine, sciences, humanities, and social sciences.

The University of Lagos achieved the same band, reflecting expanded research output and rising global visibility.

Senegal’s Cheikh Anta Diop University entered the THE World University Rankings for the first time in 2026, marking a significant milestone for Francophone West African higher education.

Other notable institutions include Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Obafemi Awolowo University, Bayero University Kano, Covenant University, and Delta University for Science and Technology.

These universities have strengthened STEM programmes, industry engagement, and innovation-driven research, contributing to their improved global profiles.

The rising presence of West African universities in international rankings underscores regional efforts to enhance research capacity, teaching quality, and global collaboration.
