Anthony Joshua crash case adjourned to March 13 as driver faces charges over Lagos-Ibadan Expressway accident that killed two

The Anthony Joshua crash case was on Wednesday adjourned to March 13 after prosecutors requested more time to prepare evidence in the trial of the driver involved in the fatal accident that left British-Nigerian heavyweight boxer Anthony Joshua injured.

Adeniyi Kayode, 46, appeared before a magistrate’s court in Sagamu, Ogun State, over the December 29 crash along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

Prosecutors told the court they required additional time to assemble their case, prompting the adjournment.

Kayode was driving a Lexus SUV when it collided with a stationary truck.

The crash claimed the lives of Joshua’s personal trainer, Latif Ayodele, and his strength and conditioning coach, Sina Ghami, who were both pronounced dead at the scene.

Anthony Joshua was pulled from the wreckage and hospitalised with minor injuries.

The former world heavyweight champion was discharged two days later.

Kayode, making his second court appearance, has yet to enter a plea.

He faces four counts, including causing death by dangerous driving, reckless and negligent driving, driving without due care, and driving without a valid driver’s licence.

The court had earlier granted him bail in the sum of N5m with two sureties in like amount.

A family representative, Adedamola Joshua, previously stated that the boxer’s family was not seeking imprisonment for the driver.

“Our son is deeply religious and is taking everything by faith. He will not want anything to happen to the driver,” Adedamola said, adding that the family preferred to move forward from the tragedy.

Kayode had reportedly worked as Joshua’s driver for three years before the devastating crash.

In the aftermath of the incident, Joshua vowed to honour his late friends through his continued career.

Promoter Eddie Hearn has confirmed that the 36-year-old is targeting a return to the ring in July.
