Bwala, Presidential spokesperson on policy communication, claimed that selective editing created a misleading narrative that fueled social media backlash.

Rufai countered, stating that Mehdi Hasan practices “real accountable journalism” and that Bwala’s complaints emerged only after public criticism.

He questioned whether Bwala had even reviewed the version he shared publicly. Rufai also noted that the supposed “doctored” quotes were actually statements Bwala himself made, simply clarified with added video context.

“This was not extra material; it was his own quote,” Rufai explained, emphasizing the need for Nigerian officials to adjust to international journalistic standards rather than expecting preferential treatment.
