Anambra youths protest alleged killing of Chinyeaka Ike, demanding investigation into task force actions and justice for victim

Youths from Mgbakwu community in Awka North Local Government Area of Anambra State staged a protest on Friday over the alleged killing of Chinyeaka Ike by operatives of the state’s Special Anti-Touting Squad.

The incident, reported to have occurred on Thursday evening, triggered widespread outrage among residents, who accused enforcement agencies of persistent harassment and extrajudicial conduct.

Hundreds of demonstrators marched from Mgbakwu to the Anambra State Government House in Awka, carrying the remains of the deceased alongside placards and green leaves in a dramatic show of anger.

Protesters demanded an end to what they described as intimidation and violence by state task forces.

Spokesperson for the youths, Arinze Nwoye, alleged that operatives stormed the area and began arresting young people indiscriminately.

He claimed that Ike was shot while attempting to flee and later died under brutal circumstances.

Nwoye called on Governor Chukwuma Soludo to intervene, stressing that the community sought justice without resorting to violence.

Community leader Chimaobi Egwu echoed the concerns, accusing security groups of exceeding their mandate and creating fear among residents.

He referenced a similar incident in the area less than a year ago, suggesting a troubling pattern.

Residents also alleged that multiple enforcement outfits frequently carry out raids that disrupt daily life and heighten tension within the community.

Responding to the protest, the Chief of Staff to the Governor, Ben Nwankwo, described the development as deeply troubling and conveyed the government’s condolences to the bereaved family.

He said the governor had directed the police and the Department of State Services to launch an immediate investigation to establish the facts surrounding the incident.

The Special Adviser on Community Security, Ken Emeakayi, also acknowledged the gravity of the situation, adding that representatives of the protesting youths would engage with government officials to address their concerns.

The protesters insisted that law enforcement agencies must operate within the rule of law, urging authorities to take decisive action to prevent further loss of life and restore public confidence.
