Sam Kerr leaves Chelsea after six trophy-filled seasons, ending a record-breaking WSL career as the club’s all-time leading scorer

Australia captain Sam Kerr has confirmed her departure from Chelsea Football Club following the expiry of her contract at the end of the season in London, United Kingdom, bringing an end to a highly successful and turbulent chapter in English women’s football.

The 32-year-old forward, Sam Kerr, who is Chelsea’s all-time leading scorer in English Women’s Super League football, will play her final match for the club against Manchester United on Saturday.

Kerr departs after scoring 115 goals in 177 appearances for the west London side, establishing herself as one of the most prolific strikers in the club’s history.

During her six-year spell at Stamford Bridge, she helped Chelsea secure five Women’s Super League titles, three FA Cups, three League Cups and one Community Shield, cementing her legacy as a key figure in the club’s domestic dominance.

Reflecting on her time at the club, Kerr expressed gratitude for her achievements and experiences in London.

“When I reflect on my Chelsea career and doing it for the last time, I just feel happy,” she said. “Happy that it happened, and I feel so grateful to have played for this club for six years.”

However, her time in England was also marked by significant challenges, including a long-term knee ligament injury that sidelined her for 20 months after an injury in January 2024.

Her career was further overshadowed by off-field legal proceedings in London related to a racially aggravated harassment charge involving a police officer. She was later acquitted after a high-profile trial.

Despite those setbacks, Kerr returned strongly this season, scoring 16 goals and becoming Chelsea’s leading scorer in the current WSL campaign, moving close to the club’s all-time scoring record held by Fran Kirby.

Chelsea Football Club paid tribute to her contributions, praising her impact both on and off the pitch.

“We thank Sam for her incredible contribution to our success on the pitch and sustained growth off it,” the club said in a statement.
