The Burkina Faso Football Federation has appointed Amir Abdou as head coach of the national team, marking what officials described as a decisive and ambitious reset for the Stallions.

The 53-year-old Franco-Comorian tactician replaces Brama Traore, whose tenure ended after Burkina Faso’s early exit at the Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco earlier this year.

The federation said the Amir Abdou Burkina Faso coach appointment followed a rigorous examination process after a public call for applications.

“Following a call for applications and a rigorous examination of the different profiles, Comorian coach Abdou Amir has been officially selected to take the reins of Burkina Faso’s A team,” the federation said in a statement dated Sunday, March 1, 2026, and published on the Confederation of African Football website.

The appointment signals a structured transition aimed at restoring stability and competitive edge to a side long respected on the continent.

Abdou first gained continental recognition with the Comoros national football team, guiding the island nation to the knockout stages of AFCON in 2021 for the first time in its history.

He later led the Mauritania national football team to a landmark victory over Algeria at AFCON 2023, reinforcing his reputation as a disciplined and tactically astute organiser.

At club level, Abdou won two league titles with FC Nouadhibou and most recently worked in Morocco’s top flight with Hassania Agadir.

Burkina Faso’s pedigree remains significant. The Stallions reached the AFCON final in 2013 and the semi-finals in 2017 and 2021. However, recent inconsistency has intensified calls for a coherent long-term vision.

Abdou’s first fixtures are scheduled for the March 2026 international window, although opponents are yet to be confirmed.
