Anambra State wins South East best at 2026 National Teachers Summit; Chekwube Ifentike takes top teacher award with N25 million prize

Anambra State has been named the overall best in the South East at the 2026 National Teachers Summit, also securing second position nationally.

The event, organised by the office of the First Lady in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Education, saw Chekwube Ifentike of Government Technical College, Onitsha, awarded the country’s first-of-its-kind teacher prize, winning N25 million in cash.

Held at the Banquet Hall, State House, Abuja, the summit focused on the theme: “Empowering teachers, strengthening the system: A national agenda for education transformation and sustainability.”

Reacting to the achievement, Anambra State Commissioner for Education, Prof. Ngozi Chuma-Udeh, commended Governor Prof. Chukwuma Soludo’s commitment to funding education.

“This is a demonstration that the commitment of the state governor to the funding of education is yielding the desired dividends,” she said.

Prof. Chuma-Udeh added that the awards reflect the fruits of investments in Anambra’s education sector and urged other teachers to emulate the success of Chekwube Ifentike.

The state has a history of recognition in education, with nine schools winning awards at the 2025 President’s and Schools’ Excellence Awards.

Woliwo Primary School II, Onitsha, won the overall best school in Nigeria and received a 16-seater bus, while Pinkberry International School in Odume Obosi was first runner-up as the best approved private primary school.

Other notable winners included Emmanuel Ndibe of St. Theresa’s Secondary School, Enugwu Ukwu, as first runner-up for best approved private senior secondary school teacher, and Nkechi Ikedi of Pinkberry International Primary School, Odume Obosi, as first runner-up for best approved private primary school teacher.
